Annual mileage analysis

The miles you drive can matter very differently by insurer.

We compared filed mileage factors across California auto rate plans. The typical change was meaningful, but the gap between the least- and most-sensitive plans was much larger.

What stands out

Mileage is a pricing profile, not one universal discount.

Sensitivity varies

The Hartford's reviewed BI curve changed 18.7% from 5,000 to 25,000 miles. Integon Summit's changed 266.7%. Neither number ranks the final premium.

Breakpoints matter

Filed plans use bands rather than one smooth price-per-mile curve. Crossing a band can matter more than the number of miles alone suggests.

Proof can matter

Some filings distinguish estimated mileage from verified odometer data. The factor difference is largest for lower-mileage examples reviewed here.

A filed mileage cliff

One band boundary, a 77% change in the BI factor.

In Integon's Summit PPA table, the BI factor moves from 0.480 below 6,000 miles to 0.850 in the next band. This is a factor change inside the formula—not a 77% quote increase.

Verified mileage

Low-mileage proof can change the category.

Two reviewed filings distinguish an estimate from odometer-based or program-verified mileage. The advantage narrows as mileage rises.

How to read this

Factor, not quote.

A factor of 1.000 is neutral within that plan's filed formula. A factor of 0.800 or 1.200 modifies only the part of the calculation to which it applies. It does not mean the final premium is 20% below or above another insurer.

The comparison covers 29 reviewed annual-mileage tables. The interactive section displays 21 distinct BI curves across 23 carrier-program pairs; identical reviewed curves are shown once and disclosed in the source detail.

Some plans use additive adjustments, telematics status or odometer-verification branches that cannot be combined honestly with a simple multiplier comparison. Those plans are excluded from the main chart or discussed separately.
